"sing street" is an eighties flashback, but in a good way
I'm always a little skeptical when a movie tries to take us back to the 80s, but "Sing Street" does a good job and makes you think that maybe the fashion wasn't quite as bad as we thought. This musical dramady comes in the footstep of the Oscar winning "Once" and the heartwarming "Begin Again," both written and directed by John Carney. This time Carney gives a glimpse of the carnage the "trickle down" recession of the 1980s took on one family in Dublin. The parents are at each other's throats and the kids are trying to get by as best they can. Connor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), the youngest, is taken out of his posh high school and sent to a Catholic boys school where he's got to figure out how to survive. On his first day he meets a gorgeous and mysterious girl (Lucy Boynton) who doesn't go to school and says she wants to be a model (at least she poses like one for the first meeting.) From there, Connor becomes "Cosmo" and he and a new friend pull together a group of misfits to create the band and the dream of becoming pop stars, or at least, getting a kiss.
